Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
