Guitar Hero Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe United Generations Between Rock Generations

Marking 20 years since Guitar Hero debuted across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the opportunity to feel like a rock star. Not literally, but try convincing anyone who has nailed Free Bird’s four-minute instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Created by Harmonix, Guitar Hero gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues scrolling down the screen in time with the music. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, producing the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio had already tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, later purchased by Activision during the mid-2000s. Together, they laid the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable series which made a remarkable influence for many musicians featured, showcasing classic groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO from the developer, remembers the early financial challenges of licensing the songs – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions alone, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero took off, and record sales and radio play were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their kids to the music they adored. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Gains a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band one featured act included Never Too Late in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist recalls the way the game brought classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a bigger, new demographic. Generally such music was considered music that was past it, but then when it was featured on the title young people were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated it, and got rid of the ‘dad rock’ label. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album was still unreleased in the US, so the game served as a primary platform of discovery for the band during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Influence

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in specialized game editions that focused on their music collections and associated lore, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the group greater revenue compared to their records. It moved well over half a million units upon release, and demand for their songs rose significantly during an era as the industry was already collapsing.

The series still motivates quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Recently, a streamer completed a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics but an array of customisation options. This track is challenging enough on the hardest setting, not to mention played at double speed and without missing every one of the thousands of cues. They stated it took nine months to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up actual weapons and enlist,” says DragonForce guitarist the artist.

DragonForce had already completed a profitable run when their hit was featured in the third game, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that we were records were moving like crazy,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before the headliners at the event.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure via the game proved so vast that it risked eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Recently, the track featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I felt differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “Should you just listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – each person has a unique path in music and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for cars, apparel or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of being a rock star on the stage. From day one, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive urge to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

Most installments were released over a mere five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles like DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and Band Hero. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles like the fan project and newer releases have kept the scene alive, with set to be something from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has begun work on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought those games could be similar to sports games where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be evergreen, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t persist with new generations.”
