In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
