This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
